As a mother I have always been amazed by how much my children have taught me. The unique perspectives you only get from the view point of a child. The innocence and honesty in the things they say.
My four year old daughter had to have booster shots this week, and like all little ones was very nervous about this. We have always taken an honest approach about these things, and talked to her about this the night before. She was very concerned about whether it would hurt and if she would cry. I told her that it would hurt some and she might even cry, but that we would give her medicine before we went that would help it to not hurt so much.
The next morning we went to the appointment, she played in the waiting room until we were called back. She sat on the table and took her shots, she only cried a little and recieved a treat. On the way out the nurse complimented her on 'being so brave', to which she said, "My mom told me it was going to hurt a little, it's not your fault."
After I dropped her at daycare I thought about what she had said.
The worst fear is the unknown, bad things happen, but be upfront about them and they are not so scary. Many clients feel in the dark during their real estate transaction. As an REALTOR it has always been my policy to be upfront and honest with all parties involved in my transactions. Gently give the bad news, with a plan of action, in the same manner you present the good. Clients respect this, it allows them to prepare themselves, and prevents unnecessary fear and worry. It helps the 'shot' sting less.
