As a mother I have always been amazed by how much my children have taught me. The unique perspectives you only get from the view point of a child. The innocence and honesty in the things they say.
My four year old daughter had to have booster shots this week, and like all little ones was very nervous about this. We have always taken an honest approach about these things, and talked to her about this the night before. She was very concerned about whether it would hurt and if she would cry. I told her that it would hurt some and she might even cry, but that we would give her medicine before we went that would help it to not hurt so much.
The next morning we went to the appointment, she played in the waiting room until we were called back. She sat on the table and took her shots, she only cried a little and recieved a treat. On the way out the nurse complimented her on 'being so brave', to which she said, "My mom told me it was going to hurt a little, it's not your fault."
After I dropped her at daycare I thought about what she had said.
The worst fear is the unknown, bad things happen, but be upfront about them and they are not so scary. Many clients feel in the dark during their real estate transaction. As an REALTOR it has always been my policy to be upfront and honest with all parties involved in my transactions. Gently give the bad news, with a plan of action, in the same manner you present the good. Clients respect this, it allows them to prepare themselves, and prevents unnecessary fear and worry. It helps the 'shot' sting less.

Smart little princess - and so cute! :)
Candice,
Thank-you for commenting, and complimenting my "little princess".
Buying a house is only going to hurt a little bit, when you have to sign and initial all those papers and write the check. But, the process if done properly doesn't have to hurt at all, just the writers cramp afterwards. I learn from my kids all the time, and I sometimes wish they would keep their childhood innocense and sweetness and not be jaded by the hard knocks we sometimes get in life.
Excellent advice -- a thoughtful approach!
June,
I have had a few (due to lender of buyer's choice) that have hurt a lot. But I do find the truth and a plan of action always ease the pain.

Cindy - Great Advice! I've always been honest, especially with my children. In fact some times my husband thinks I'm a little too honest with them.
Michelle,
Honesty is always best with my daughter. If she is not prepared she can scream and kick with the best of them. Thank you for commenting!
Thank you! This advice is practial and so true. I raised my kids the same way. They are now 19 and 16 yrs old. They love being told the truth and I hear them telling it to their friends.
Cindy, what a beautiful analogy! We do learn so much from our children and from the way we change our way of thinking and caring once we become parents.
A Rookie parent, my daughter is only 11 months and we are expecting again in December. I can only imagine what my children will be teaching me. So much to look forward too!
Hi Cindy, so true and a great synopsis. We take the honest approach with our litlle one as well and it has worked very well so far :-)
I used to try and shelter my kids from the doctor's office visits. I was afraid they would freak out if they knew they would have to have a shot. I remember my oldest son was 5 when I told him it would be fun but he got a shot and he was truly unhappy. He wouldn't speak to me the entire ride home. After that, my husband suggested that we just tell them the truth from then on out. Well, 5 more children later and we still hold to that decision. If something bad is going to happen, we let them know and we let them know what will happen after the bad thing is over.
That is probably the absolute BEST thing you can do for your real estate clients! Knowing is sooooooo much better than not!
~Renae
Kids always teach us so much. It is so important to let our clients to know what to expect and also to set reasonable expectations.
Matthew,
Enjoy all that your children can teach you.
Barbara,
Children respect us when we are honest, and so do our clients! Thanks for commenting!
Renae,
Honesty is always the best policy, otherwise you make them distrust you. Trust is earned it is not a given!
Joan,
You are right!
Nice. I never wanted children -- probably because I was such a juvenile delinquent that I figured my child would follow in my footsteps -- but I always enjoyed volunteering to take young children to the Zoo, Splashtown, Astroworld, Jellystone Park, and other places so that their parents could have a little time off from the trials and tribulations of raising children on a daily basis. Learned a lot from those day trips.
Great analogy, Cindy. Many times I have worried and stewed over some unwanted piece of news I need to share with my clients, only to have them take it well, deal with it and move on. All that worry for nothing! If we're straight with people, they can usually be trusted to be reasonable.
Being upfront with clients helps them hope for the best and prepare for what might happen in a transaction.
It is so true that we can learn a lot form our children. I mostly am prepared for the unknown in my personal and business life. It is good to prepare your clients for the unknown as well.
This is oh so true when dealing with sellers. I think we get ourselves in more problems because we are so afraid to say what needs to be said. Prepare, repeat, prepare and go.
Being with kids is like learning all over again. Thanks.

Dianne,
I have found that my clients reaction is almost always less than what I imagine, when there is bad news. Having a plan of action always helps.
Sharon,
You've got it. Thanks!
Suma, Bev & Bob,
Preparation is key!
Cindy,
Such a good post!
Just this week I wrote in my calendar (to remind me)
To dare is to do
To fear is to fail.
cute, cute story
Cindy, the unknown is scary, honesty, knowledge and solutions are a comfort to our clients. As a side note one of my friends 3 children all had a doctors appointment after school. She picked them up after school promptly, but her car died in the parking lot. They all cheered!
Sheila,
Tis' the season, with back to school here. Good hearing from you, thank-you for commenting!
Sara,
Divine intervention, perhaps! Thank-you for your comment.
